We want to let you know about a few items on our summer West Seattle Be Prepared calendar. We’ll be doing outreach at a couple more community festivals, and participating in some other preparedness activities. In chronological order:
SummerFest 2016, July 9th & 10th — Look for us in the Community Tent (inside the main Festival Information booth), where we’ll be sharing space on rotating shifts with other West Seattle organizations. We’ll be there from 10 – 6 on Saturday, July 9th. On Sunday, we’ll be sharing table space with the West Seattle Block Watch Captains’ Network from 11 – 2. You can stop by to learn more about our activities, as well as pick up informational materials including our hub map postcards! [Note that during the times that we aren’t in the Community Tent, you can also find our hub postcards at the West Seattle Timebank booth – located in the GreenLife area.]
Delridge Day / SW Precinct Picnic, August 13th — We’ll have an informational booth at this unique and informative festival.
Alki Summer Parkways / Disaster Relief Bike Trials, September 25th — A group of cargo bike enthusiasts have created a networked event called the Disaster Relief Trials that will take place in West Seattle this year. During this event, they race against the clock along a predefined route to move disaster supplies and equipment from place to place. Hubs in the areas set up and receive or send supplies with the riders, like water in buckets, shelter tents, blankets etc. etc…you know, all those things that we talk about sharing between hubs. The route will start and end at the Alki Bathhouse (11 AM – 4 PM). We plan to have several of our West Seattle emergency communication hubs set up for this event; will post additional details as our plans firm up.
Seattle OEM / SNAP classes — As well, we want to call your attention to these workshops and Disaster Prep classes that will be held outside of West Seattle this summer. These are from the Seattle Office of Emergency Management (OEM) event calendar.
- July 12 – Accessible Disaster Communications in the Digital Age
- July 12 – Disaster Skills Workshop (fire extinguishers, etc.)
- July 15 – Preparing for the Big One
- July 26 – Disaster Skills: Basic Aid
- August 6 – Home Retrofit
If we’ve overlooked anything important – especially West Seattle preparedness-related events – please let us know and we’ll add them!
